We place high emphasis on reading and writing and relate as much reading and writing in other subjects as possible. These skills underpin every part of the curriculum and are key skills for future learning. Children receive a daily Literacy session which is taught through a quality text or topic work that will engage the children as well as daily phonics session for which they are grouped according to ability. Developing a love of reading amongst our children is a focus for 2016 /2017 because reading is the key to the rest of the curriculum and we feel in particular that it will have a significant impact on the quality of writing across the school. In writing our priority is to improve the standard of spelling.
Every class in KS1 and KS2 has a daily Guided Reading session to improve reading and comprehension skills. We make good use of our well-stocked and attractive library and encourage every child to take a book home to read every day. As part of this session we encourage reading for pleasure and spend time recommending and sharing books we think might appeal to each child. All children will have their own log in and password for ‘Bug Club’ which enables them to access books at their level at home.
Children who are identified as having particular weaknesses in Literacy are given additional support through intervention programmes.
